Practice and recent improvements of lead and zinc production at KCM-S.A.

ABSTRACT

The present company KCM-S.A. began its industrial activities in 1961 with the start-up of the Zinc Plant. The Lead Plant began operation in 1963. A number of technical improvements have been implemented during the next years, aiming at increasing the capacity of the main operations and introducing new ones.
Since 1990, challenged by the necessity to solve as soon as possible the ecological problems, KCM has been realizing gradually a program of technical reconstruction. For a comparatively short period, the emissions of dust and heavy metals with the waste process and ventilation gases have been reduced under the stringent standards in Bulgaria and the EC. The emissions of sulphur dioxide and industrial water have been reduced many times.
During the same period KCM began production of SHG zinc, a wide range of lead and zinc alloys, silver, gold and products from precious metals and their alloys.
